Hello and good morning.

I am a relative newbie to raising chickens. I welcomed my first day old chicks on June 19,2012. They are all girls. There were 2 delaware (Precious and Princess), 2 barred rock (Tallua and Bob), and 3 austrolorps (Nugget, Geraldine and Lucy). We love them, and they seem to be doing well. My 5 year old sings to them every evening before bed. So sweet.

Two days ago we welcomed some silkies to the family. My husband built them their own coop and run. We have a gorgeous white roster (Big Guy )- 4 months old, 3 hens (we hope) -1 each black (Ebony), white (Ivory) and partridge (Cutie)- 3 months old, a white hen (Phyllis)- 5 months old and a black hen (Little Mama) 1 year old. The oldest girl, Little Mama, has some issues. Her legs are deformed and she hobbles. Her previous owner said that she was attacked by a cat when she was very little, I believe a week old.

I love this site, and am so happy to have found it. I look forward to making connections, and .

Any suggestions on feed? I have been feeding my girls starter/grower. I want sure what to do about my silkies. The previous owner said they just fed them scratch...

I welcome your thoughts.

Nicole

I meant to say that I am looking forward to making connections and learning. They is what happens when you type before coffee.

! Happy you joined our site! Not sure what to feed silkies as I've never had them. Don't know if a chicken is a chicken is a chicken when it comes to feeding. Lots of silkie lovers on BYC though and they'll be able to advise you. Good luck to you and your chicks!

Howdy Nicole, I'd think you can feed silkies the same food as you feed all the others. Starter grower feed works for all laying chickens as well as long as you supply them with calcium. The only main difference between starter/grower feed and layer feed is layer contains ground calcium where the starter does not.

Wow! Thank you all so much.

I gave them all starter/grower this morning. I have been adding a small amount of Ultra Kibble to it. Most of the silkies seem confused, but once Big Guy started eating it, they all joined in.

I also have a correction, Phyllis is almost eight months old. She is very interested in the nest box. I am having a blast with them. It is very calming to just sit and watch them.
