Hi to all you members. I have just joined BYC. I have had poultry for a number of years & now I am starting to breed a few just for kicks. I got a Trio of Golden Spangled Hamburg chooks & started to hatch them in an incubator. I'm trying to concentrate on breeding mostly hens, because hens seem to be harder to get. Out of 36 eggs I managed to pick out 8 pullets. I picked out 18 eggs for a sample & marked with a felt pen which I thought were male x 4 & female x 14 & put them in the incubator. They hatched & I raised them, & finished up with 4 cockerels & 14 pullets.
The pullets seem to be harder to raise then the cockerels. I had 6 pullets die between 3 &12 weeks.
I picked up another 2 hens last week from an auction to set up another trio, so I am going to get into it this season & see what luck I have.
I also have a flock of Isa Brown chooks, 16 all up. I have 6 hens, 8 pullets , 1 rooster & 1 cockerel. I bred 4 pullets & 1 cockerel from the hens & rooster. The other 4 pullets I got from the auction to put with the cockerel to get a different blood strain going. All the pullets are starting to lay.
I am going to try to breed some Isa Brown pullets to sell at the auction next year because there were very few at the auction this year. They are fantastic layers. Sold 6 dozen eggs last week.
So that is a bit of me & what I am up to. I shall keep you all updated on my progress & if I need any info. I know how I may get some help. Will put up some pics of my flocks so you can see what I have.
