Hi to all you members. I have just joined BYC. I have had poultry for a number of years & now I am starting to breed a few just for kicks. I got a Trio of Golden Spangled Hamburg chooks & started to hatch them in an incubator. I'm trying to concentrate on breeding mostly hens, because hens seem to be harder to get. Out of 36 eggs I managed to pick out 8 pullets. I picked out 18 eggs for a sample & marked with a felt pen which I thought were male x 4 & female x 14 & put them in the incubator. They hatched & I raised them, & finished up with 4 cockerels & 14 pullets.

The pullets seem to be harder to raise then the cockerels. I had 6 pullets die between 3 &12 weeks.

I picked up another 2 hens last week from an auction to set up another trio, so I am going to get into it this season & see what luck I have.

I also have a flock of Isa Brown chooks, 16 all up. I have 6 hens, 8 pullets , 1 rooster & 1 cockerel. I bred 4 pullets & 1 cockerel from the hens & rooster. The other 4 pullets I got from the auction to put with the cockerel to get a different blood strain going. All the pullets are starting to lay.

I am going to try to breed some Isa Brown pullets to sell at the auction next year because there were very few at the auction this year. They are fantastic layers. Sold 6 dozen eggs last week.

So that is a bit of me & what I am up to. I shall keep you all updated on my progress & if I need any info. I know how I may get some help. Will put up some pics of my flocks so you can see what I have.

Hi,
welcome-byc.gif

Thanks for giving us such a nice introduction. It sounds like you have had good luck with your breeding and hatching, good luck going forward with that. I'd love to see some photos of your flocks. We have 3 red sex links in our mixed flock and you're right...they are fantastic layers.

It's nice to have you here!

so glad you have joined us.

If I am reading the intro correctly, your guesses on the male:female egg ratio was fantastic.

I have only a small backyard flock and no experience with hatching or breeding. But have to know, what egg characteristics did you use to guess what would be what?

Hi Sunflour, Thank you for your welcome. Yes the ratio of male to female is ok, but not as good as I would like. I'm still only practicing, I would like to get to 99.9% result if I can. The method I use is simple, I tell or sex the egg by the shape of the egg. The male egg is more pointed at the point & the female is domed at the point. I found this out by trial & error. I picked out a number of eggs & marked the eggs each with a felt tip pen to conform my result. Just experiment a little, you can try this to see if it works out for you. I hope it works out & helps you.

I know a lot of people do not put much belief in the "shape of the egg determines gender of the chick" theory, but I tried it on my last hatch and loved the results. I plan to try this theory out more next year and see if my luck continues.

Good luck to you!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Sorry you lost 6 hens out of that hatch. That is odd, BYC has a large Aussie community and a dandy thread called "Australia, six states and one funny little island.

Yeah, they were walking around with their wings drooped down like a penguin & started to die. So went to another wives tale & gave higher protein food. I gave them turkey starter crumbles & a complete grain mix with a little shell grit, mixed up well & put it through a grinder & ground it up fine & gave that to them. Then mixed 1/2 a litre of clear vinegar with 100ml of cod liver oil in 20 litres of water to drink & they came back to normal after two days. What ever it was that seemed to cure the problem & the rest lived.
