Hi, my name is Chris. I am just south of Raleigh, NC. I am new to chickens of my own, however I spent a lot of time on my Grandfather's farm with his chickens. Things are always different when its you taking soul care of something and there is a lot I need to learn. I get eggs from a friend that raises chickens and I feel its time to raise my own. I am a low level homesteader. I try to make it myself or find ways to make recycle things to serve another purpose. I enjoy finding ways to get the job done without having to just go out and buy something. I hunt for subsistence and live off venison for my primary source of red meat. I either eat that or chicken so I think it makes sense to start a flock. I have a working relationship with a local university's poultry research facility that has already offered to give me all the birds I ever need, so I look forward to getting started. I also have a customer that farms organically grown chickens. When the buyers come to get a barn they always leave the stragglers that just take too long to chase down. He said if I catch them I can have them. I do want to find a good breed that serves my needs for layers and meat birds and get a mating pair that will brood a healthy population of its own.
I am in the planning stages now. I am pretty sure I know how I want to build my coop. I have a 24'x24 cinder block shop building that I am going to use one exterior sidewall to build off of. I have poked around YouTube and will do the same here looking for information of various topics that I feel I could use some education on. I appreciate all the help I am sure everyone will give.
