New Member hello

Thank you everyone! Our whole family is loving our new additions. We are concerned about our Ruby girl with the crooked neck. I made a post last night in the chicken injury/illness/emergency section too. I hope some of you make it to that post and have some helpful words for us. <3

Wry neck is sometimes caused by a head injury or a peck to the head. It is common in the Silkie breed to the extent that is is often referred to as "silkie syndrome." Silkies tend to have high domes and at times the skull doesn't completely harden over.
Try searching for "wry neck." Sometimes it responds to polyvisol pediatric vitamin drops (NO IRON forumula) & a few drops of vit.E ( from a pierced capsule) daily. If a vet feels it warranted he may use cortisone in treatment.

You can also try gentle massage- aimed at positioning the neck correctly. I'm a bit rusty with this. In my early years on BYC, it seemed that wry neck was extremely common. But, I haven't seen it mentioned in quite awhile.

Thank you! I started feeding her vit E with tuna for the selenium today. My son is doing very gentle massage on her neck to promote proper positioning. I'm just really concerned that I'm noticing this too late to help her heal. I haven't contacted a vet yet. I will if her condition or eating habits change.

Hi Shawna! Welcome to BYC! How is Ruby doing?

Thanks for asking. I'm sorry I haven't updated here after asking questions about wry neck. So, she's about the same. A slight difference is that she is starting to extend her neck up and forward for a few seconds at a time. This is making me really hopeful. She started doing this last night. She's doing it more and more, but always snaps back to crooked. She also started twisting around pretty far to preen on that side - also a new action.

I attached a few pictures to show the position of her neck. Her neck is curved WAAAY out to her left side. The pics don't really do it justice.

Thanks again,
Shawna
