I've had my chickens of 6 months now. I have acquired them slowly. Now have Light Braham, White Leghorn, Brown, Leghorn, White Crested Polish, and a Polish I'm not sure going to turn out white or buff. I've been using this forum to get ideas to build my chicken run, now Im in the process of building coop and moving my girls out of dog kennels.

While in my current business trip, I've found a feed store selling peacock chicks. My question is what do you guys think peacock in the urban subdivision backyard? Does peacock makes loud noises? Are they flighty? Would my 5'5" ceiling 700 sq ft chicken run is too low and too small for it. I only built a run because I lost 2 chicks to hawks, I would rather see them roam free range. What do you guys think peacock as backyard pet?

Thank you in advance for answering

as far as peacocks. Yes they are noisy if you get a male.

We used to have 3 peacocks--2 female and 1 male--here in suburbia. Because the male had no competition he was a happy camper. The only time he was noisy was during mating season. Otherwise they were all pretty quiet. As far as we were concerned, he made less noise than our neighbors constantly barking dogs and the four-wheelers the neighbors would run around in their yards. Two sides of the birds pen area was bordered by a 6' privacy fence, and we ran the flight netting so it would go higher than that in the middle. The male needs a good 6-6.5' height when he spreads out his tail feathers. Hope this helps.

I really don't want to "rain on your parade" but in all honesty unless your live on a sizable lot I would advise against a peacock. I currently have a male who showed up here about a month ago and has been here ever since. I think he is actually from a place about a half mile from my house. I think he likes it here because I have a lot of chickens and I am home most of the time. He is very beautiful but he is VERY noisy. After he flies up to roost in the top of a pine tree (you'd never believe how high up!) he lets out his peacock calls til about 10:00PM. It sounds like you're in the middle of the jungle. I have heard other peacocks before that sound just like a woman screaming. While I live in the country and have had no complaints about his racket, if you're in a subdivision or have close neighbors you might have trouble. He also likes to roan around our property and I think would be very unhappy if caged.

Thank you for response. I changed my mind, I don't want him step and scratch on neighbors' cars. I will admire them for now, but reconsidervwhen I move to country side.
