Hi! Our family has been raising chickens for over a year now and have really enjoyed the experience of watching them grow up from just a few days old to adults. We have 9 hens and 1 rooster.

One of my questions is how long after washing my eggs do I NEED to have them refrigerated by before they need to get tossed? My oldest son washes our eggs as soon as they’re collected with blue Dawn dish soap and a gentle scrub brush as they are usually covered in poop. I can’t see putting them in my refrigerator or leaving them out anywhere when they’re so yucky looking, so that’s why we wash them right away. This has been a good routine for our son and works best for our family without any issues with our eggs going bad. However, the last time our son washed the eggs, they didn’t get refrigerated right away. They’ve been sitting in our dish drying rack for 2-3 days now and I’m unsure if I should throw them away? I put them in a basket separate from our other eggs and have them in the fridge until I know what to do with them. I’d hate to throw them out, but will if I have to. Any advise on my particular case?

Blessings,

Welcome to BYC. How old is your flock? If your eggs are covered in poop it usually means one of a few things. 1.Your hens are old and their vents are "relaxed" 2. they need worming 3. Someone is sleeping/pooping in the nest box
I keep my eggs on the counter for up to 5 weeks, but I get so many that i just toss the dirty ones.
Refrigerated eggs should have a lifespan of that long also but if the bloom is scrubbed off, I do not know.

I would eat them myself, assuming they smelled ok when cracked open. I'd probably hard boil them, though.

I would not fix them for people who have a history of sensitive stomachs.

I would not sell them or give them away.

There is some risk; it just depends on how much risk you choose to take.

Edit to add... maybe I wouldn't eat them myself after looking up why eggs might be covered in poop as a routine thing. I don't know about that; it sounded to me more like a few were and your son liked the job of washing them.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Eggs should be laid fairly clean and there shouldn't be a need to wash them. So definitely try to determine why they are so pooped up. If you do need to wash them, they definitely need to be refrigerated and I would eat them fairly quick, washing off the bloom allows bacteria to enter the egg.
