Hi Jackie. Chickens(chicks) like to roost on the wide side of the roost pole, so they can put their feet ahead of them. In cold weather they will lay their head on top of feet to keep them warm etc.

Chickens don't perch with feet curled around like wildbirds sitting on branches.
