Thanks for your reply. I have been removing the extra eggs. The coop is elevated. For next time, when a broody hen needs to be moved, where should she go? I read several articles that said she shouldn’t be completely separated from the flock, so maybe something similar to a metal dog crate?Hello and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.
Have you been removing the extra eggs?
She should have been moved out of the nest boxes before you allowed her to set. She now has to stay put until the hatch is over.
When the eggs start hatching, affix a screen or chicken wire across the opening to her nest to keep the other hens out. When the hatch is over, move her and the chicks to the floor of the coop and let her brood them there until she is ready to take them out.
The entire flock should be on Flock Raiser or chick starter with oyster shell available for the other hens.
Is your coop elevated or on the ground?
Thank you!Hello, and welcome to BYC. Yes other hens are laying in the nest and may cause problems. I'd limit their access to her nest site. Good luck for a successful hatch.
She should be in a semiprivate area on the floor of the coop. She needs to be able to come and go from her nest as needed.I read several articles that said she shouldn’t be completely separated from the flock, so maybe something similar to a metal dog crate?
