Well I just thought that I would introduce myself and say hello. I don't have any chickens as of yet as I am still building my Coop. My wife was insistent that she wanted another dog and I finally got my chance to ask for chickens, once she agreed, I got started. And you thought that most guys would ask for a flat screen TV, not this guy. I love the outdoors and I love to garden so I thought chickens would go hand in hand. I will soon post the progress on the coop, I am a bit of a perfectionist as well as a Designer of homes so it is quite the feat. In the meantime I am trying to find the best chickens to ad to my coop, I'll take any suggestions.

and Welcome To BYC! Who needs a flat screen TV when you can have Chicken Television, you will be watching them for hours. TwoCrows gave you some great links to get you started on your breed search. Also check out the BYC Breeds section for member reviews of a lot of breeds. So far as breeds go, for egg numbers alone, the commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown are probably the two most popular layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Australorps, Orpingtons (lots of people really like these, great pets), Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. The Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs, and they tend to be very nice birds, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for dark brown eggs.
