(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
used to have 13 hens and one rooster and around 1,000 rabbits - had to give them away when I became sick two years ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
0 - but want to get some for a small piece of country land we have
(3) What breeds do you have?
would like to get RIR - but they are difficult to get here
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
God Bless Google !
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Cooking, reading, internet, learning new things, everything animal !
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Here ( en tu casa ) live my hubby and I - Vicente is a 46 year pediatrician by vocation - not a business - I am a 60 year old administrator. Our childern are all grown and we have two granddaughters 3 and 15. Our home is shared with 4 dogs and 3 cats.
We live in the very center of Mexico - the State of Gto. 20 minutes drive from our home we have a piece of land ( 2,400 sq meters ) with about 30 fruit trees a one room cabin with attached bath ( very rustic ), cyclon fencing inbedded in cement and with the terrane a bit slanting from north to south - this land is on a hill side and we have no standing water.
I REALLY want to have 20 chickens for those farm fresh eggs ! Once you have them the store bought eggs are sawdust !
I need to make an inexpensive coop that would keep the girls safe from night crawlers - there are field rats the size of small cats and possums that I know of.
A friend gave me a gift of large pieces of fencing material - very sturdy about 3 meters long x 1.5 tall. the weave is quite close but not close enough. I was thinking of putting one section up on stilts to be the floor of the coop - covering it with chicken wire and then a layer of hay. I am thinking that this would be very good to have a well ventilated coop. the sides would be of the same fencing material but with plates of styrafoam painted with a waterproofing paint ( so the sun would not destroy it ). The roof would be of some kind of metal - tin ? ( do not know the word in english ) Thinking of cutting a place to be able to get to the nests from outside. I want the chickens to free range all day and to go to the coop at night for saftey and so they will lay their eggs inside instead off all over the property.
Apart I am wishing for 3 female sheep to keep the grass and weeds at bay - now we must spend all day Sundays weeding and watering - am thinking of putting in automatic watering for the fruit trees so I can have time for animals.
There is a watchman in the community who I can pay to see to the animals during the week and we would go on Sundays.
What think you ?
Thank you,
Sheila in Mexico
