For breeds, I would personally recommend the Wyandotte. Wyandottes are medium-sized birds that lay, in my experience, over 250 large brown eggs a year. My Wyandottes have been very docile birds that tolerate heat and cold well, and that haven't fallen prey to any diseases.

One breed that may not be quite as good as Black Sex-Links at laying, but is still a great breed, is the Wyandotte. I would definitely recommend it to almost any new poultry owner. My Wyandottes have laid around 250 to nearly 300 eggs each year, per bird, and are only now slowing down at nearly five years old. Mine have had excellent temperaments and have been easy to handle. They are docile and tend to get along with other birds well, though are often high in the pecking order. Wyandottes are extremely cold hardy and do fine in the heat as well. I find them to be the most personable and inquisitive of my birds.

I've had Speckled Sussex in the past and like them very much--enough that I have seriously considered getting some more. They are beautiful, very hardy, have the same friendly, calm, and gentle temperament that the Australorps have, and are good layers, although not quite as good as the Australorps. My children made lap pets of both our Australorps and Sussex.
 
That's exactly what we are looking for! Now we are trying to prepare an area for the coop and run and plan the coop. My husband is nervous that he won't get it done in time so doesn't want me to purchase any chicks yet. I'm ready to get started!
