We're very excited over here! Our first ever egg came on Friday! Momma, our olive egger laid a small perfect little olive egg and another on Saturday! She is supposed to be an Ameraucana/French black copper marans cross but to me she looks like a small cuckoo marans. She's half the size of her hatch mate Penny who may be the one who laid a light brownish speckled egg today! Our egg basket is getting more colorful by the day.
So we have 2 olive Eggers (one confirmed olive layer so far)24 wks old, a Barred Rock 20 wks old, Hybrid Black Sexlink 19 wks old, Welsummer 18.5 wks old, Lavender Orpington 18 wks old, and 3 Crested Cream Legbars 12 wks old. I wanted a colorful egg basket, thought the kids would get a kick out of all the colors!
We seemed to wait forever for that first egg but really, it wasn't long at all. Momma turned 24 wks a day after she laid
Momma's first egg -
Penny's the orange one-
Momma is the dark grey one in front-
We've since sold off the young Lavender Orpington cockerels.
Our backyard coop-
I didn't expect a speckled egg today, figuring our Welsummer is still too young to lay. I suppose if Momma and Penny are part Marans of some kind, there's the chance of speckled eggs there.
Thanks for reading, sharing in my excitement, and any input or speculations are happily received!
