Hi I'm a new BYC member but I've been reading the forums and searching for help with "Chicken Issues" on this site for some time now. I'm in the Southern West Virginia area and I raise Silkies, Cochin Bantams, Coturnix Quail, Cayuga and Khaki Campbell ducks. I've never been an "animal person". I didn't dislike animals but with a full time job I didn't really have the time. My middle daughter however is a lover of all things animals and eventually wore my husband and I down until we purchased her a few Silkie chicks. The rest is history! I'm excited to be here and hopefully I can figure out how to maneuver this site.

We are new too. This seems to be a good website. Good luck and have fun.

Silkies are very popular and kids' favorites. They also tend to make excellent broodies. Which means they like to sit on eggs and hatch them. If no eggs, they will often try to hatch rocks or nothing at all. A rooster is needed in order to have 'fertile' eggs.

OR during times when acting broody, you can slip fertile eggs of any breed under the silkie and she will hatch and raise as her own. Many folks keep some as "natural incubators."

Does anyone know of a good hatchery for Silkies? Meyer Hatchery is sold out of everything! Just curious thought of maybe adding a few to my flock for my little girl I think she would love them.
