Hi y’all! My name’s Krizelle, from Central Pennsylvania. I’m a newbie/first timer, only got my 4 girls (Pickles, Trouble, Peaches & Blue *individual photos in order*) in early spring of 2020. So far, I must be doing something right since they’re all still alive. My husband and oldest daughter actually surprised me with the chicks and there wasn’t a sign about what kind of chicks they were. Just by looking, I believe they could be ISA browns although the neighbor (experienced with poultry) thinks 3 are Rhode Island Reds and 1 a Buff Orpington mix. They are so much fun!! Each have their own personality and 1 who is pretty sassy, but all are spoiled!! As a young child, I used to be petrified of chickens. I was born and raised in the Philippines and my uncles raised Roosters for cockfights which is a big sport there. They were super mean and used to chase me so I didn’t know what to think when my daughter jumped out of the jeep carrying a pet box thats tweeting loudly! But raising your own is completely different.. I am an avid animal lover so my girls are more like family pets than just egg machines to me. I clean all their droppings every morning after they leave their coop. As of now, they have me all to themselves and don’t have to share me much to another hobby. If/When they do, it would probably be practicing calligraphy and dabbling into some cross stitching.

I’m married to my best friend, have been together for almost 14 years. We have 2 daughters, 11 and 12, a cat we adopted, and 2 dwarf hamsters.

I found BYC from google and have learned PLENTY from the beginning, so I want to give a shout out to all the members because y’all have taken part into keeping this Mama sane and keeping all my girls alive to this day.

THANK YOU ALL!!

So I have an issue with 1 of my girls, Pickles. She was the first one who laid on 8/22. On 9/17, we found a busted no-shell egg on the floor early in the morning. She was not herself all day, was super lethargic and kept falling asleep standing and almost fell over a few times, would not come at feeding or anything 😞 She went on to lay another no-shell egg right as it got dark, probably around 7:30-8pm right before they go in the coop, then another one at 10pm. We have been providing oyster shell mixed in their feed (crumbles) and a small dish alone should they want/need more. She started laying normally again on 9/19. That is until 9/30.. I got my 4 usual eggs in the morning. I usually “tuck them in” their coop right when it gets dark, around 7:30-8pm.. if it’s still pretty warm out, they all put up a fight about going in, but it was a bit chilly so there was no issue. Around 10pm as I was laying in bed, I just had this weird feeling like I needed to go check on them. Sure enough, they’re not perched or in their “rooms” (nest boxes) but all on the floor pecking like crazy (I keep a 50watt red basking light on at night) I shine the flashlight on the floor and find a busted egg (this one was soft shelled) and all their beaks YELLOW!! I nearly had a heart attack!! I hurried and grabbed the egg and put some bedding on top of what I could see. I call for my husband, but my kids came running out. we turned on the regular light and the girls are kicking everything all over trying to find the egg or what’s left of it. I’m trying to rush and sweep everything “contaminated” and they are pecking at the full dustpan trying to get more 🤦🏻‍♀️ after about 5 or so minutes, I believe I get everything cleaned up. The girls are not happy and they’re definitely letting me know. Pretty sure they woke the neighbors. My husband can hear them inside the house over the TV!! The following day 10/1, she was a bit lethargic but not as bad as she was on 9/17. She had a bit more energy this time and actually joined in at feeding time. 10/2 she was a bit better than the day before. And today she seemed better than yesterday..

Anyway, Pickles has not laid an egg since that night. It seems she tries every morning.. she goes into a box and sits until someone else goes in the box on top of her, then she will either move to a different box or just give up entirely. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do?
