Hi all! My name is John and I live in Kansas City, Missouri. I grew up on a livestock farm in Oregon with up to 20 chickens of varying breeds. Fasting-foward to now, my wife and I really want a few chickens for our backyard. I really want at least one Barred Plymouth Rock chicken. We are just getting started with the planning process and figuring out building a coop and whatnot. But anyways, came across this forum and thought it will be a good resource as we embark on this process.

Welcome, John!!

Hi John, good luck to you on establishing a flock! Early spring you should find chicks for sale at farm stores like TSC. You can also order chicks from various online sites like Murray McMurray, Meyer Hatchery, My Pet Chicken and many more. BYC also has a Buy-Sell-Trade forum where you may be able to locate chicks for sale in your general area: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/chicks-1-day-to-8-weeks-old.53/

Thanks for joining us!

:welcome Welcome aboard John. Glad you decided to join us. First thing I would do is to check with your local ordinance to verify that you're allowed to have backyard chickens, then once that's out of the way, shop away!

Here's a section that you can search to see if someone near you has already posted about your area...

Hiya, John, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Are you thinking of building a coop? We'll all mostly recommend you either find a shed to remodel, or build one. We have a ton of coop articles in our Coop forum that members wrote and documented what they built. Many come with step-by-step instructions.

We're glad you're here!
