Thanks for the warm welcome and the links everybody,
I'm very excited, and looking forward to getting my little flock up and going.
It is something that I cherished as a boy, and the building of my new aviary is basically a re-creation of those wonderful childhood experiences.
It actually comes with a pretty cool little story of how this came to pass, and is in honor of a great man, who meant alot to me.
I am looking forward to learning all that I have forgotten in the past many years, and hopefully my kids will find it to be as enjoyable, and rewarding as I did.
I belive that some of lifes most valuable lessons and experiences, can come in the simplest forms.
I am very proud of the job we did on the new aviary, but still have alot of work to do, to get it ready it for it's up coming residents. lol.
I am hoping to have a fairly good sized population, of a few different types of birds, and I'm hoping the aviary is of acceptable size.
I would like to have approx. 6-8 good laying hens, as well as a strong population of quail, and pheasants.
I may even toss in a few pigeons too, because I remember watching the Tumblers, was like having a" home grown Airshow" each weekend ! lol!
My initial aviary is a walk-in, 12' wide x 24' long x 6 1/2' tall, with a peaked roof a bit taller than the walls.
I intend to build a nesting coop inside the aviary, for the chickens and pigeons, with exterior access doors, to the laying hens boxes, for easy egg retreival.
I will also have a quail pen/house within the aviary, as well as a "sick bay"/injured bird "holding cages", should it become necessary to seperate a bird from the free running population.
Any tips on coop/cages designs are greatly appreciated, and I'm sure I'll be picking you brains for all the do's and dont's that come with this new adventure.
I can gladly post some pics of what I am working with, if anybody is interested in seeing it.
You should just go east on the 91, take 15 north, exit 6th street and go right. There are several feed stores there that you can buy all kinds of poultry stuff. If you go to B&E feed, ask for the $10% discount. They had gift cards that if you bought one for $50 they would put $55 on the card, but those cards kept crashing their computers, so now you just have to say "I would like the $10% gift card discount" and they will give you ten percent off no matter what your total is... just saying...
Welcome to BYC and have fun with your kids!
