Hi all,
Looks like I was remiss in doing an intro when I joined last June. I was so excited about having my first flock, finding this website & reading all the great information & then having a neighbor start a Hatfield/McCoy type of feud that an intro went by the wayside. So now will play catch up with you since I've had a little nudge in the right direction.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not new as I grew up around them with Grandma & Auntie. Got my babies in June 2009.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 7 hens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
1 Americana banty, Abigail; 1 Austrolorp, Malia, 1 Polish Crest/ aracuna/cochin cross, Maggie, 1 Americana/Aracuna cross, Penelope,
1 black speckled hen, Maddy (not sure of her breed but she sure is a talker), 2 large white Americana's, Laverne & Shirley
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Searched the web.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, stained glass, hot glass, camping, my critters, philosophy, reading, art
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm married to a great guy; we are Jack & Jackie (for real). My husband is a cabinet maker & I work as a home health aide with seniors & the disabled. We have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 1 Betta fish, & 7 hens.
I love this sight. Have learned so much from it. My experiences with chickens were only as a youngin' chasing after the banty hens with babies in my aunt's flower garden (you can guess who started the chase & who ended it, hahaha). Fiesty those banties & they sure don't appreciate you trying to horn in on their babies. Auntie always had her brooder going in the spring & let us handle the babies to love them just for a little bit so they wouldn't get sick from too much handling. Have loved them ever since & adore my girls. My old folks love the stories about them & my other critters get along fine with them too. My calico cat, Jasper, stopped stalking little Abigail last summer & seems to have a new respect for the girls. Wish I'd been around to see what happened to bring that about, but rest assured my hens take no intimidation from any cat. Look forward to knowing all the folks on here.
