Hi Everyone -

I've been using your site as a resource and thought it was time I joined! I am using the suggested questions to introduce myself:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens but have wanted them for a very long time. I got my first chickens on Mother's Day - almost two weeks ago! Happy Mother's Day to me!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have three chickens - all hatched on/about May 9th.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Two of the little ladies are Ameraucana and the other little lady is a Black Sex Link.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I found out about BackYardChickens.com while searching for coop ideas on the internet.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy playing music (my husband and I perform locally in town - country, folk and cowgirl style!), gardening and camping in my little vintage trailer.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have two daughters, two golden retrievers and two cats. I am still working at the University here but am winding down on my last year (yay!) before retirement.

I am looking forward to increasing my flock in about two years with a couple of Barred Rock chicks. We are in the process of planning/designing our coop and run. The coop will be 4' x 4' (set 2' above ground) and the run an additional 4' x 6' for a total of 4 feet x 10 feet.

I am really impressed with this site - it has been an incredible resource in just the couple of weeks I have been visiting. So much knowledge and so much good chicken vibes!

I am very happy to be part of this community!

the best advice I can give you is to make the coop and run bigger than you think you'll need. Chicken addiction hits fast and hard. You will find you need more space.

In general you need 4 sg.feet of space per chicken inside the coop and 10 square feet per each in the outdoor run. You can stuff more in the space but, they get stressed and quickly turn to feather plucking and fighting.

Hello and welcome .... so glad you joined BYC

I agree with diva. The more room they have the happier they will be.

Good luck to you

Thank you all for the kind welcomes and advice! It sounds like I should plan for a bigger coop than 4' x 4'? Would the height of the coop make a difference? Ours will be 4' high with a pitched roof. I only have 3 chicks now, but I would like to get 2 more in a couple of years. I think 5 is all I could handle! Many thanks! Maria
