Good Morning! I've been following BYC for months, learning from those who have posted questions and answers. Now I have a question of my own, so I thought I'd join and ask it!

But first, the intro. We moved into our new house with two acres in February 2018, and within a few months purchased a chicken coop and four hens. We lost two (my best layers, of course!) to predators - hawks, I think - so I purchased a few chicks to raise. Of the nine chicks I've raise, seven were killed and/or eaten by one of our dogs. :thWe currently have three hens (not sure the breed) and they are laying fairly consistently.

I work in IT, so raising chickens is a nice diversion for me. My next adventure in country life will be beekeeping, but I'm not quite ready yet. I enjoy the fresh eggs, and we have found that we eat them almost daily!

I guess that's about it. I'll post my question elsewhere, but wanted to follow etiquette by doing the introduction first. I'm looking forward to learning more! Thank you!

David

Hi David, it's nice to have you here!

It sounds like you need an enclosed strong run to keep your flock safe.
We let them free-range to keep all the bugs at bay. After we lost those two (and another, unrelated incident), we installed the 5' welded post fencing with 1"x2" "no climb" fencing. Since doing this, we haven't lost one, so maybe it was a four-legged predator.

And a happy clucky welcome to you my friend. So glad you joined us. It's totally awesome here on BYC; even more so as a member. (Wait till you start getting those unexpected points and awards.) The forums are so informative, (but) of course you already know that. So, hang on in there with us and ask away. Some one (maybe even me) will be pleased as punch to assist. Once again, welcome , welcome, welcome.
