(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I adopted 2 meat hens that escaped from the chicken house next door. These 2 (Miss Bojangles & Miss Winners) were on their way to the processing plant

. i literally saved their lives. This was 1 month ago. Miss Bojangles died last week. Miss Winners seems to be healthy.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have 3 chickens right now because last wek I bought 2 silkie Bantam chicks. I was told I could not put them with Miss Winners because she might be sick. I now have 2 small coops to keep them seperated. The chicks are in the house most of the time because they are only 3 weeks old. Miss Winners is alone, is this ok? She seems to be lonely, so we are outside with her most of the day. I was told she would not lay eggs. She does not roost or walk around much. I do let her free range, but she wants to stay in the run most of the time. She does like sitting in my lap and she has just today started climbing her ramp to the inner coop at night. I was putting her in it every night. she is currently in the larger coop (Chicken Cabin) I purchased at a feed store. I have a Rabbit hutch I was going to put her in because we built a run for it. Since she does not roost, I thought this would be perfect for her. She is attached to the big coop and I do not have the heart to move her, she is soo sweet. I have to move her soon so as to use the large coop for the Bantams. I was told to clean this coop thoroughly with bleach? I really hope you guys give me some advice on what I should do with her. I had 1 person telling me since she was a meat hen, then I should put her down. She is a pet now and we love her dearly.
I have 1 son who is 18 and in the Army. My mother told me that I was "Empty Nesting" and that is why I am so ambitious with the chickens

. I have a 12 year old son and he has learned to love the chickens. This is a great hobbie and I encourage everyone to try it at leats once!

Hello and welcome to being addicted! I ordered and got an assortment of 25 Bantams and have 3 EE pullets and 2 California White pullets from the feed store. They followed me home when I went in for a new heat lamp bulb. LOL.

Welcome!!

I hope your Meat rescue survives!! I was under the impression that they don't have a good track record for long life because they are bred to get butcher weight REALLY fast, and this causes a lot of health issues. Here's to your girl surviving and being an exception to that!!

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!..I took the babies out today for 5 hours in 72 degree weather! Usually they tire after an hour and start their obsessive chirping. They are in now and running around their cage trying to find a way out! I guess it is almost time for the coop. We still have between 45 to 55 degree weather at night, so I am keeping them in the house at night for now. They are still only 3 weeks old. Miss Winners, the meat hen will not free range. I have given her theoption by opening all the doors while I am outside, but she will not leave the coop. The coop I was going to put her in is going to have to be for the little ones for now. It is a rabbit hutch. DOES ANYONE THINK THIS IS OK???
