(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Grew up on a farm in Texas and hated plucking chickens now retired and just got back into chickens last year with neighbor friend across street who has barn.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Last April we bought a bunch of chicks (about 65) - had 11 layers left this year along with 2 roosters that snuck into the mix. I bought 10 Isa's last week from a lady who is downsizing her flock, and they were only 10 months old so we now have 21 layers (doubled our egg productions) overnight.

(3) What breeds do you have?
A mix of Isa Browns, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington and we initially had some meat birds. We butchered the meat birds after 8 weeks, quite tasty!

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Looking for a spreadsheet to record egg production and keep records and it was here where i found it.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, camping, making home brew

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Retired Navy - married 43 years - 4 grown sons and 7 grandkids. Been in Michigan 30 years now and am totally retired, wife still working so i am now a "Domestic Engineer and Child Care Advocate"...... ok you got me i keep house and babysit grandkids.....

Hello everyone...this is my first post. I have been reading this post and the forums for a while now trying to prepare myself and my family.

We have 3 chicks arriving at the end of May. 1 EE, 1 Buff Orpington and a Black Australorp. Have the brooder set up for the most part. I am using a plastic storage tote for now but may have to get something bigger before the ladies can be moved outdoors. I have also decided to use a nipple waterer for the chicks when they arrive. After doing a lot of reading and research I think this will be the best setup and the easiest for the kids to help with and not get grossed out

Everyone is looking forward to the arrival of our new pet chicks. So far the names the kids came up with are Chica, Sunshine and Cadbury. This may change once the chicks are here and put their individual personalities on display.

We have 4 children that range in age from 18 to 3 years old. 2 dogs- a pomeranian and a german shepherd. At Christmas we obtained two more furry pets.....gerbils, they provide quite a bit of entertainment as well

I am looking forward to learning more from everyone here and am still working on our coop which will be in our carriage house. Will post pictures at a later date once I am able to and the little ladies arrive.

Take care.
