Hi there! So glad I found this site in my chicken research wanderings!
Last summer, my boyfriend’s parents got a dozen Buff Orpington hens for the farm that they share. “The Ladies” were so much fun to watch and so well behaved. In the fall, the regrettable decision was made to slaughter them, as we didn't have the proper space to winter them.
Earlier this spring, a friend of ours who has 'city hens' found that the rooster he got with his order was LOUD and about to get him in trouble, so we agreed to take "Sam" (short for Sumatran) and a buff Orpington hen to keep him company (Sally).
Then, just two months ago, my boyfriend took me over to Tractor Supply to pick out my own dozen chicks! We selected 6 Buff Brahmas, and 6 white chickens of indeterminate breed. Raising them has been a lot of fun, and waiting to figure out if they’re hens or roosters is killing me!
During weekdays I live in a small town with my mom and an elderly cat (Groovy), about an hour drive from my boyfriend’s farm where I spend the weekends. I like to read, crochet, cook/bake and a few other crafty-type hobbies. I help a little with the big farm garden, even though I’m not that good at it. I kind of enjoy cleaning too, which is a good thing, since I get to maintain two houses! I do a little sewing (mostly to save money on costumes for Renaissance faires) but I don’t love to sew. I joke that I am a “Hobby Survivalist”. I’m not one of those people waiting for the apocalypse, but with our skill sets combined, my bf and I stand a good chance of making it! Our friends all plan on coming to “the farm” if the end is near. J
Right now I’m a part time employee at a local grocery store, and a full time student, studying for my Associates Degree in Health Information Technology. I can’t wait to graduate in September!
That’s probably more than you wanted to know about me! I can’t wait to read all your advice on raising my “babies” right!
