Hi! I don't have any chickens yet, but a friend of mine who raises chickens is going to incubate about 20 eggs for me. My kids and I are having a great debate over how many eggs we think will hatch and of those how many will be roosters. I would love to know what you all think??? We won't be able to keep the roosters due to city ordinances, but my friend is kind enough to take back the boys when we figure out who's who. For now, I am soaking up all the knowledge I can about raising chickens and my husband is researching coop/run ideas.

We are so excited! This will be a first time experience, but long time dream of mine

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, there will definitely be roosters in a hatch. But if the person hatching will take them back then go for it. Roosters can encompass half or more of a hatch sometimes. Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. You've been given some good information and links by other BYC members. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens are you getting from those eggs?

Orpington, RIR, Leghorn and a few others I can't remember the names of

I just found out he put 30 eggs in the incubator. I am now trying to guess how many will hatch to determine what size brooder to have. My plan is to start them out in a rubbermaid container and then upsize from there as needed.

Just in case he has a fantastic hatch - buy the biggest Rubbermaid container you can find. Make sure to have a good wire covering on top to keep the chicks inside and everything else OUT. They also need the ventilation with a wire top. Sending good hatching vibes your way

Hi welcome to BYC, this is a great place to ask and find out any information that you may need especially being a first timer as I was and had my first hatch recently, I had 10 chicks hatch out of 15 and have learnt a lot through the process. Its so exciting for the kids my son was checking the eggs everyday and loved watching them hatch, its a great experience I hope you and your kids have just as much joy and fun with it as we have.
Good luck and happy hatching!!!
