Hello- we bought a house 2 years ago that just happened to have a run down coop in the back from the previous owners. I thought why not just fix it up a bit, well famous last words. We started with 6 female chicks (one died as a baby) so we had 5 hens for a while. I loved getting eggs and having little things to go see and feed. Then I got some ducks because why not, and now i have 13 cinnamon queens, 2 silkie girls and 2 silkie roosters, the original 5, and some ducks. They all live together in a bird village I built myself. We just did our first cornish hen slaughter and have months of organic, ethical meat.

We had no experience and did a lot of research beforehand. We made some mistakes. But we have been keeping chickens for 2 years now and can never go back. I have a home bakery so having eggs is a godsend.

Since then we have added a handful of goats, 2 donkeys, and a barn cat. We came to this little farm with 4 dogs and we have grown by 30+ animals.

We got married this past fall and want to raise our children here and leave them with something much more valuable than anything a bank can cash. We are expanding our garden and have a little orchard. We both work full time he as a corporate office guy and I am a paramedic for a nearby county. My schedule allows me to be home several days at a time which makes finishing projects and such much easier.

When we are not working outside, spending time with our animals, or at work I like to bake (with sourdough and beyond) and cook elaborate meals. My husband enjoys open world video games though we dont have a lot of time for TV these days. I seem to have stumbled on living a dream I didnt even know I had. I used to think my career was my passion and while it still is one, I have found what we do here on our homestead sooooo fulfilling.

I joined here to find valuable information and a network of people who do what we do. I dont have a lot of local people near me that I know who can give advice etc. Thank you

Wow great story! Welcome! You obviously are like us crazy chook people,

Please post photos of your menagerie for us to see.

There are a lot of great threads here, ‘How many eggs did you get today’, ‘what’s the weather where you are’, and a new one ‘This chicken isn’t dead’ where we post photos of our chooks sleeping and sunbathing (look dead) - first time my silkie chicks did that o thought they were dying - I called my niece in a panic, she laugh and told me Aunt K they are sunbathing!

There are also photo contests and my favourite the caption contest where you put a caption to a photo they post.

Check out the threads and if you have medical/health issues questions there are lots of great resources here for that also.

Again welcome! Look forward to seeing photos of your chooks and other pets.
