Homesteader Julie
Chirping
Hello Peeps,
I’m no expert, so I’m only here to learn and hopefully learn lots. I have had chickens now for 2.5 years and we are literally a backyard flock raiser as we are in the city limits. We are only allowed 12 hens and no roosters, but I actually have 9 hens and 1 rooster.
Hens consist of 2 BO x RIR crosses, 2 EE, 1 Black Sex Link, 3 BO, and 1 BCM. Rooster is an OE. We just hatched 2 chicks in the incubator from the BCM and are waiting on 1 more to hatch tomorrow After that the rooster may be soup pot bound, although this chick thing is too much fun.
We would love, love, love to have more birds, but don’t want to overstay our welcome with our neighbors. With aging hens, we might consider eating our dual purpose stock, though butchering is not my thing. It’s still kind of new to us, this whole having chickens and loving them so much.
My other hobbies include our horses (not in the backyard), my chalk art business, and homesteading. I’m a high school science teacher, so let’s throw that in there since it takes up all of my hobby time.
Anyways, thanks for having me here and I hope we can all cluck up a nice conversation or two.
