Welcome!

We fenced the gardens instead of the chickens -- lots cheaper, plain old chicken wire will keep chickens out. Then built a large chicken yard (about 60' x 60'.) Now we turn them loose sometimes, when we're out ad about.

from California!

I loved the way you said "mothering" your chickens, right from the get-go!

If you don't build a run for your chickens, you will have to fence your gardens. Then there is still the nearby road to worry about...

Well,
I've been "mothering" non-humans for much longer than I have humans. I tend to make people who know me roll their eyes when I talk about my "children".

Thanks for the fencing ideas. I think I may fence an area from the side of their shed around two big evergreens that they love to play under. That way they'll have the trees still.

I shall let you know as we progress!

from Connecticut! Wow, 16 is an ambitious start, good for you!

As far as your garden concerns, you didn't mention how large it is, but we fence around ours and have no problems with the girls getting in it at all. We also live on a busy road and they rarely wander into the front yard and never into the road.; I guess they're just not that curious about what's on the other side.
