Family and I moved from Maryland this fall and bought 5.4 acres of Ponderosa Pine forest just outside of Black Forest (after the fire). The property had a coop on it to house around 12 birds, a little tight during really cold weather but works for heat purposes. This is our first time having hens and are delighted to the numerous eggs we have already received (Thank You Buff Orpington, 4-5 weekly even during winter). We are hoping to have them free range and breed randomly so as to have a more natural feel (we will see how that one goes).
Our current flock consists of:
3 - Easter Eggers or Ameraucana (cannot tell) - a little over a year old - one big girl leads the bunch
one refuses to lay in nesting boxes
1 - Buff Orpington - a little over a year old
huge light brown eggs wont quite fit in the XL egg holders
3 - Australorp - 4 months old
refuse to use the roosting bars and sleep in the nests
1 - Cuckoo Moran - 1/2 months old
raised around the Australorps so sticks with them
On the way
EE or Ameraucana Rooster (Big guy, but flighty and not so social; hope he works out)
7 - Cochin Straight Run Not till April -Hoping to get a few Broody females
On a side note I'm getting ready to start ground on a huge coop 10x16x16 inside of a greenhouse. Hope to be able to let them rummage through it when temps are to cold outside. Half the coop will be 6 feet underground to help with temperature regulation. A small section will be dedicated to a few Heritage Turkeys. They will be separated to avoid the Chicken / Turkey issues.
