Hello,

Not the way to do it, BUT ... on the spur of the moment, we bought a dozen chicks about 5 weeks ago. These are the first we have ever owned. Love the idea of fresh eggs!

All 12 have survived, to this point. We bought a "need to assemble" coop at the same time. The coop is small. The box stated that the coop should house 6-8 chickens. I disagree and think it will house 3-4 chickens. Although it still seems small for that many ... Hubby is looking to expand, and build a second coop.

We have barred rocks. After researching the difference between male and female, I believe we have 8 males and 4 females.

I found BackYardChicken.com while researching how to raise healthy birds.

I am at the "almost" empty nest phase of life. Our five children are grown and moving on, although not necessarily out, at this point. I'm once again unemployed and looking for full time work with benefits, like insurance. I am also attending college for the first time. In two weeks I will have completed 6 college courses, mostly online.

We recently lost my husbands' dog, Gypsie (boxer, sharpei, and german shepherd mix), and we still miss her. My dog, Gracie (Corgi mix), is 10 years old. My daughter's dog, Mia, is a chihuahua, yorki mix (chorki, lol). We have 3 grandchildren who live too far away.

Thank you for providing a place to meet others who are also raising backyard chickens.

Congrats on your new babies! If you'd like to post pictures of them in the What Breed or Gender section of the forum, we would be happy to help you figure out if you really have 8 males and four females. If you do, you'll probably want to keep one rooster maximum - more than that and the hens could get over mated and possibly injured by all the males.

Those put together coops are always small and they usually say they can house way more chickens than they can, so you are most likely right about it being too small. The recommended minimum is four square feet of coop space per chicken, so that should help you figure out how many birds it can hold.

Congrats on your chicks! Good choice on breed too!

Funny that you have a dog named Gracie; I have a chicken named Gracie!

Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you, glad you joined the BYC flock. I had a dog named Gypsy many years ago, and a hybrid plant named Gracie (actually Amazing Grace)
