1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
These are our first chickens. I've been interested in livestock for a long time now but we weren't in the position to buy any till just recently. We picked them up last weekend. So they are a little over a week old by now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Eight.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Barred Rocks and Jersey Giants.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We'll have to see, but I hope they fit into our garden/food system in a positive way.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Hunting (mostly), gardening, hiking, and working on the house.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a husky who has a high prey drive. I work in the pipe trades doing commercial construction. In the fall from September through December, I am in the woods most weekends trying to get meat for the freezer. Hunting is probably my favorite thing to do besides gardening. I hope the chickens will get us the eggs we need and bring benefits to our garden as well. We are trying to grow most of our food this year. We are upsizing our garden substantially this year. (~1000 sq ft)
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I used google, looking for a place I could read up on caring for chickens. It's always fun to see what other people are doing with theirs as well.
