Hi m. My name is Rae and my husband and I are getting ready to get some ladies since our town allows them now. We have 4 crazy kids who are getting excited about our adventure! We live in Missouri and any suggestions on good breeds from some experienced folks would be appreciated as well as some good suppliers of hens! I know we are definitely doing a mixed flock!

Welcome! I ordered my chicks from Meyer hatchery and I am very happy them. They all survived and are thriving. I was very worried about them shipping. It was only 12 degrees the day I picked them up. I have 3 wel summer 3 silver laced wyandottes 3 dominiques 3 buff orpingtons and 3 Easter egger. The dominiques are by far the sweetest chicks and buffs come in 2nd. I have a pretty diverse flock that will lay all different colored eggs. How many are you planning on getting?

This one of my Dominiques she sleeps in my hand every time I hold her. So sweet.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I've never ordered chicks from a hatchery but I would recommend Meyer Hatchery and MyPetChicken.

Have you thought about breeds? I would recommend buff orpington. They are affectionate and great with kids. Plus they are great layers.

Our learning center is a great place to start building up chicken knowledge!

I know i was definitely thinking of an orpington or two a Wyandotte and a silky still in the research process since the weather here goes from one extreme to the next in the same week!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. I would recommend going with breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being very calm and gentle such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, and Sussex. All of these are good layers (Australorps are excellent), and my children made lap pets of all of them. If you don't mind hybrids, I would also recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds or hybrids you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

I'm glad you joined us.

You've chosen some good breeds! I especially recommend the Wyandotte chicken. Mine have been hardy, personable, docile, very good layers, and great pets.
