Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. I would recommend going with breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being very calm and gentle such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, and Sussex. All of these are good layers (Australorps are excellent), and my children made lap pets of all of them. If you don't mind hybrids, I would also recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year.
