Hello all! My was in 2nd grade this year and got to hatch eggs at school. We took her chicken home with the intention of giving it to a friend who has a ranch when it grew up a little. Well Danana has now become a family pet and of course we had to buy her a friend so we ended up with "Cat" the Bantam chicken who is in my picture with my son.

I think that Cat is a rooster, but not sure how to tell. I will also post a picture of Danana, because we have no idea what breed she is since she came from an egg.

I look forward to seeing a picture of your beautiful chickens. The pic of your son with Cat is adorable!

Thanks! I will try and post pictures of the 2 of them this afternoon. We need to find out what kind they are and what gender. :)

Cat is a pretty bantam! And he does look to be a rooster. Good luck him as well as with Danana!

Please be very careful of the chicks/chickens especially around your child. They are greatly attracted to shiny things like eyeballs. Since they don't have hands, they peck everything to explore it. It is best to never have birds up in the face. Children and adults have suffered painful and damaging results from pecks to the eye. Goggled or safety glasses are a good preventative, though the chicks will probably peck at that also.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Are they to be house pets. If so you may be interested in the "people with house chickens," thread.

Thanks for the "eyes" up! ;) We are have a coop for them in the backyard, but the kids do like to bring the pet chickens in the house on occasion.

Thanks for the info. He has always been quite chatty, even when he was a chick and he seems to be a bit protective of his girl chick. So far he is very sweet-hoping it stays that way.
