Helped grandparents feed and butcher chickens 64 years ago, but as an adult I migrated into college and a 30 year military career. Those Arkansas, Texas days are long behind me. Would like to become a little more LESS reliant on mainstream food and also solve a problem on my 5 acres....grass burs. Hoping by dragging a chicken tractor around I can induce hens to eat the tender new grass bur seeds before they dry and become semi-lethal weapons to poor family and pet's feet. After a few years maybe all the seeds will be gone and no longer a threat. Worth a try....and I do like chicken products if my theory is a flop.
Intrigued by Michael Burr's A-frame tractor in Backyard Chickens' Guide to Coops and Tractors (http://www.amazon.com/Backyard-Chickens-Guide-Coops-Tractors/dp/1440316961). I know that "if I build it they will not come", but by then I hope to have enough knowledge to raise poultry successfully.
