thanks to all you for the warm welcome.
Sorry my reply is so tardy, I am new to all this and I just figured out how to respond.
to answer your alls questions, I have four hens. Starr, Miss Betty, Miss Mary, and Henny Penny. I've had them since July 2013, they were bout 8 weeks when I got them. Bought them from a local petting zoo.
I got my first eggs the last week of Jan 1014. It was cold out and they all burst. I didn't know I'd be getting eggs in the winter so I wasn't looking everyday. I remember it vividly because dad was in hospice and I took pictures of them for him. He was so excited that I got chickens, and he couldn't wait to eat fresh eggs like he had when he was a kid. He never got to eat one, sadly dad lost his battle with cancer on Feb 1. I miss him and think of him everytime I bring in eggs.
Anyway...on to more positive thinking...
I joined this forum so I could make sure I'm giving the girls what they need. And to learn from you all, as I have very limited knowledge of keeping chickens. I was told there is nothing to it. But I find that to be untrue. And I don't want my hens to pay for my lack of knowledge.
That being said, they have survived this far, on laying mash and some cracked corn. They get let out of the pen in summer almost every day, not so much in winter. Lately a hawk has been eyeing them so they are cooped up....and molting...ugh.
Any advice at all is appreciated.
Thank you all so very much
Sandy
