Hi, my first name is Kathy. I have often come to BYC site for many answers to my questions during the 4 years of having chicken(s). We originally started a bit over 4 years ago with a purchase of 6 chicks from TSC. 2 Wellsummers (I asked for 2 roos, got a roo and pullet) and 4 red-sexed links. Not long after we were purchasing another 6 pullets (2 buffs, 1 EE, and 3 others that I cannot remember the breeds of). The following year we purchased 3 more EEs. At this time I was a floor nurse working three 12 hr. shifts a week. However, I ended up taking a new position that required working Monday through Friday 9 hours per day(I was working much longer hours - up to 16 hour days). We also had rabbits (6 does, 2 bucks). My hubby is 15 years older than I and retired. Unfortunately, with me working so much it became overwhelming for him so we got rid of all except 1 chicken (she hid and successfully stayed with us). Phoenix is our original EE. She lays 4 to 5 light pink eggs a week. While she seemed content accepting us as her flock, we wanted her happy. So this year, agreeing I will not go chicken/bunny nuts again, we purchased 6 new chicks: 2 ISA browns, 1 Road Island Red roo, & 3 Cornish Rocks. Since this purchase we have processed the 3 Cornish Rocks and was very happy with the results. We presently have 19 more (the second purchased flock are due for process next week and the 3rd purchased Cornish Rocks are 3 weeks old and still in the brooders). We lost Willy the RI red roo in an accident. However, the ISA brown pullets, Trouble and Road Runner, are doing great! Phoenix has since accepted them and I believe is happy with her new flock that she reigns as queen over. We also got back into the bunny raising. We raise standard Rex rabbits (Bertha, Kim2, Homer and Kahn) and recently purchased a mixed New Zealand white / Californian. His name is Cal (he was sold to us as a doe - lesson learned check the sex yourself) and was 9 weeks at purchase. He remains in the isolation hutch and hubby loves him. We have had 2 litters since restarting in the bunny raising business. We will process our first 4 grow0out kits today at 16 weeks old. Healthy food is important to me as well as being able to provide that food for ourselves.
