My girl Goose has been having a rough 3 days. Below is an outline of her symptoms and what we did:

Day 1: We noticed lethargy and little interest in doing things (she’s normally our loudest and most active girl). I noticed she hadn’t laid an egg so I thought she was egg bound. We gave her a few salt baths and moved her inside. I gave her crushed tums and half a calcium pill.

Day 2: Not much change - I brought her to a vet where they eliminated the possibility of an egg broken inside her because there was no fluid on the ultrasound. They gave her a calcium injection and she’s on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds. They also gave her a medication to induce her passing the egg.

Day 3: Still no egg. Her poops are more solid and I can feel an egg inside her vent. However, it feels like there’s tissue around it. I’m unsure of the “normal” angle to find the egg, as well. We put her in her coop tonight because she was too tired to walk across the yard on her own. She’s still eating treats we give her and drinking some water.

We learned she is underweight and maybe 5 years old. She’s a rescue chicken and has lived quite an interesting life.

My fear is this could be a lash egg and I don’t fully understand my options. I need to avoid another $500 vet visit, so I’m hoping there’s a massage or way I can manipulate the egg out at home. I feel so sad for her, I can tell she’s uncomfortable. She’s puffy and always in a wide stance. I really don’t want to lose her.

Welcome To BYC

Did the ultrasound show any material inside the abdomen?

If you are feeling an egg inside the vent and it feels like there's tissue around it, you may be feeling an internally laid egg or perhaps some lash material, etc. in the abdomen.
Unfortunately, you would not be able to remove material inside the abdomen without expensive surgery and often a hen is not able to survive anesthesia.

I would follow the care instructions the vet provided for you. If she does have lash material or egg material in the oviduct, hopefully she'll be able to expel that and will feel better for a time.
