New member- storing eggs

You'll get lots of opinions on egg storage. You have to do what works for you.
Leaving them on the counter unwashed is perfectly fine but maybe at your house they go bad quicker then they would at mine. Everything from elevation to house temp and humidity can play a factor.

I personally don't wash my eggs and store them in the fridge. I have more space in there then I do on the counter. When I use them I don't wash them unless there is something on them. And even then it's a little water and rub with a towel. (I also eat eggs after giving wormer but that's a whole other thread with even more opinions lol)

Ok. I promised a pic of my dirty eggs. Generally the duck eggs always look dirty in varying degrees and generally the chicken eggs look clean. The ducks have been rebelling and laying eggs in the mud lately since I cleaned the duck house.

I've never put eggs in the fridge. I have a couple wire baskets hanging on the wall that we rotate through so we use the oldest first. I dont think I've ever had eggs longer than 4 weeks or so but we've never had a bad one.

The ONLY time I have ever gotten bad eggs were being stored at room temp for a few months... ONLY the eggs who got cracked or poked or had some other form of physical compromise to the shell went bad (and consumed by maggots). All others, even the ones that were contaminated weren't technically rotten. Though I did throw them away if contaminated.

Solution... hatch them eggs you can't eat fast enough because chicken math caught ya!

Part of the reason I don't wash eggs... is because if they have gunk on them... they are still stained afterwards. So people may assume it was poo and not dirt that you washed off. I have sat eggs in my bator that had poo on them, scraped off once dry.... Hatched and thrive (and/or) still good to feed back to the animals. Though I won't feed back shells that were contaminated and incubated for that long. I have NEVER had a non starter that rotted before the end of incubation. Though I have had early dead that rotted by the time I could tell.
