Hi everyone, my name is Staci from the Johnston Roost.
As a kid I was raised around chickens on a farm and ranch along with other livestock. I use to show livestock as well. But, never birds. My grandfather and step-father raised game birds and had prize gaming roosters. I helped care for them and never did I want any of my own! Well, enter into a new Era of life at 50 and decided I needed chicken's. Mostly for the eggs and the benefits of free ranging chicken's to control insects like ticks on our property. My grandson is an animal lover and another reason I have my chickens. Lol That has been almost 2 years now. I currently have 12 hens(2 silkies, 2 Amberlinks and 8 Easter Eggers) and 4 roosters (2 bantams, 2 Phoenix). I got started by incubating eggs from my father inlaws backyard mix and then buying some hens from Tractor Supply and a friend recently giving us the 2 Phoenix roosters.
I started my exploration into birds from a work friend giving me 2 Pekin Ducks 11 years ago and currently have 6 ducks.
I hope to learn from everyone here and share any wisdom or insights I may have as well. Mostly learned the hard way. Thank you for the welcome and look forward to meeting and making friends.
