Hi

My name is Heather and I've been poking around this site for a few weeks now...finally created an account :-) I'm new to raising chickens so I have a lot to learn.

I am going to post a question on depressed chickens and I hope to get some help. I have read many of your post of the subject but I haven't had the 'light bulb' go off for my hen's situation, and she is getting worse so I need help.

Thanks,
I look forward to learning more about raising chickens from members here.

Welcome to BYC!

I am sorry about your hen. A depressed hen is sick. You need to post this question in our emergency section for help with your hen.

I hope you can get her healed up and back on her feet soon!

Depression or worms there are a lot of reasons a chicken is depressed but more like sick how old is your chicken and what is she doing to give you this impression also how many other chicken friends are in the yard ?????

Try feeding them some hard boiled egg's it is good for them and it give's them some energy and a natural medicine to boot

Thanks for the replies.

I'll log on my computer shortly to make sure I post in the correct place.

quick notes on my bird I believe she is about 4 months old but from an auction so unsure. I bought her with 4 other hands and all (except for one that passed away) are doing fine.

I'm going to have to log online because my phone is acting up :(

Thanks @gander007

some answers to you questions

This particular hen (Chickadee) is one of the original five girls I bought from our local auction. (sisters) about maybe 4mths old at the time and I've had them for about 2 months. I also bouth a rooster at the auction.

About three weeks after getting my first chickens I bought three more from the feed store, these three are a little olde.

Two weeks ago one of the girls from my first hens (Pinky) died. There is noting that makes since about her passing, she was just dead in the coop in the morning. The hen I'm worried about now, Chickadee was very upset and laying next to her sister that died. Ever since Pinky died Chickadee has acted 'depressed'. Prior to Pinky passing Chickadee was like the others, active etc, but since she passed I have had to remove her from the coop as well as return her at night. She was moving around the yard a little, but more to go and tuck and hide somewhere. For the last 2wks I have had to bring water and food to her, up until today she would at least eat and drink a little, but today she wasn't even trying.

We bright her in and my son gave her water from a small tube which she did drink. She acted like she would wake up but it was only for a minute at the most.

A friend of mine said maybe she has a blockage and to give her a luke warm bath, which I'm doing now. The nice thing is the bath is cleaning her bottom and she has stood up a couple times. We have a small water dish with a garlic clove inside the tub with clean water and she has been drinking!!!!

As for food , the chickens have grow and lay feed and they have full access to the yard so plenty of grass and bugs. I did buy some vitamins for their water but think my rations were off because they didn't like it.

Thanks for the reply and any thoughts to help!

Have you wormed your flock lately or at all ????

It really sounds like worms and yes chickens do get depressed when a friend passes ....

This is what I use to get fluids into a chicken when they refuse
to drink on their own and it can be purchased at a medical
supply store or farm store ....

[Gander007[/@]

No I have not wormed my birds. I'll check the feed store I've been going to maybe they can help me with that.

I'm thinking she started depressed and maybe became sick over the last few weeks? *unsure

How can I test for worms or any other parasites chickens?

It wont hurt to worm your chickens every six months to a year but it is always a good practice
