Hi everyone! Been lurking this site for the last couple weeks and thought I'd join the forum!

I've been interested in raising my own chickens for the last couple years and finally decided to take the plunge. I'm want to start building the coop asap while I have some down time. I want to have 5 hens(2 plymoth barred, 2 Rhode island, and 1 silkie). I l from what I researched, I can house them in a 4L x 4W x 5H coop with a 3W x 6L x 4H run.

I just have a couple questions regarding the build.

How tall should the run and coop be? Is there a minimum?

Are the dimensions of the coop and run sufficient for raising and keeping happy birds?

I'll probably have more tomorrow but, I just wanted to get the the ball rolling.

Thanks everyone!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Your planned run is too small.
Shoot for 15 sq ft per bird in the run and 4 sq ft per bird in the coop.
I strongly recommend a walk in coop and run. It's no fun trying to work in a coop or run you can't easily access.

Welcome!
Do you have a plan or sketch of what you’re planning on building?
oops! Forgot to upload the picture lol

Welcome!
The height isn't too important...I'd make it tall enough for you to walk in though.
good idea! I figure I'll be in there cleaning daily.

I'll have to remeasure the area I plan on building it. Hopefully I have enough room to accommodate the extra space. If not, what is the minimum square footage for the run?
