Well after reading the breed section here, and various other posts my chicken wish list has um grown. I am very excited and can't wait to move and get started on building the coop of doom.
I have a few questions that maybe someone out here can help with. Oregon is new for me, and I have only ever had chickens in Massachusetts and Wyoming. I know the weather will be more damp and on the cooler side, will be just 45 minutes north of Eugene and 35 min south of Salem. With the weather in mind, I am trying to think what would be the best way to deal with the rain, mud and whatever weird bug and predators that this region has. A friend of mine lost one of his hens recently to an owl, so I am going to go with a hard cover roof for the run (rain and owl deterrent). Should the coop be raised off the ground? My other coops had earth floors and that worked well for deep litter and I never had a problem with critters getting in, but I worry that it may be too damp for earthen floors to be a good option. Also should I continue with deep litter or go with sand? I read some of the threads for and against sand, and I am leaning to sand in the run and shavings in the coop.
As for my hopeful chicken line up, I went on the wait list at Ideal for spitzhaubens 4, cream brabanters 2 ,black langshan2, black shamo2 (for the hubby he feels the need for dinos, they may end up in their own coop) and I also would like to have blue americanas 3or Easter eggers3, and a token australop 1. Then of course is the matter of free range guineas...still debating them, I will have a lot of land and would like something to do bug duty on it, who knows maybe the shamos can, they may be big enough when fullgrown and probably be easier to keep on the property, will see, more reading needed
