New Member with a BIG problem...

You said you cracked open an egg. Any way the egg was left out in the coop for extended period of time, put in fridge for a while, forgotten, & cracked later. Maybe it was rotten when you put it in fridge & you just didn't notice? Do your girls free-range & lay eggs all over tarnation? -- If so, this might be a possibility, particularly if it hasn't happened again?? Hoping you figure it out.

In response to chi-rn: My hens have 4 nests inside the coop and I collect the eggs everyday. I read on this site from 2009 from someone responding to another person with this same problem the theory that since I only see a rotten one about once a week that the egg is actually rotting INSIDE the hen and is already rotten when it is finally laid. I dont know...sounds like a possibility....??? I just dont know how to figure out which chicken it is!

Thanks so much for all the nice welcomes!

Fix a place where you can separate 1/2 your flock. When you get a bad egg, you will have eliminated 50% of the hens. Keep doing that until you know. I have NEVER heard of an egg rotting inside a hen. The process is around 24 hours long from one egg to the next and it takes weeks for an egg to rot in most cases. You have a mystery on your hands, can't wait to hear the outcome.
