I am excited to join this community. My grandparents had chickens when I was growing up and for a short period of time I had a small flock of 5 hens and 1 rooster. I have done quite a lot of studying and I decided I am ready to include chickens in my life again. I am not an expert at raising chickens, but I have some experience with them. I look forward to the wealth of knowledge and the community this site has to offer.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

You don't have to be an expert with poultry to be here (I'd have to leave if that were true). What we all share is an interest in and a love of birds....chickens, ducks, turkeys, peafowl, all kinds of birds! How exciting you are going to have another flock.

Make yourself at home here, check out the great articles in the Learning Center, ask questions, share what you know with others...it's all good.

Thanks for joining us!

Whoa...back up the chicken wagon, NFC. You do too have to be an expert to be on here - just look at me. I know everything there ever was to know about chickens....I know what to feed them and when, I know what not to feed them and why, I know how to house them, how to raise them, how to interpret their moods and sounds, I know when each chicken breed will lay to the date and time, I know the SOP for each and every breed, I know a rooster chick from a pullet chick when they are still inside the egg, I know.....

What? Sorry, I missed that question....can you speak up? Now hold on here, what kind of question is that? Nobody knows that! Sheesh! Trick questions like how many chickens are out in my coop right now are NOT FAIR.

Tee hee....welcome to BYC, farmgirl46! Glad to have you!

Welcome to Backyard chickens, glad you joined the flock. The Learning center will have answers to most of your questions - the various forums may have the rest. We are here to assist you. If you put the name of your state in the search box, it should pop up with your state thread. Posting there you can find answers that pertain to your locale.

Some day, when I grow up, I'm going to be like you Blooie and be able to know roosters from pullets before they hatch. Until then, you can be my mentor.

Now straighten up, we're in public!

P.S. So how many chickens are in your coop right now?

Um, right now? Like in "this minute" right now? Well, it depends. If I really, really need eggs, there are probably only about 7. If I'm dusting for mites, there's 56, on accounta that's how many hineys it feels like I am powdering. At feeding time the feeders empty so fast it's like there's 112. So safe bet, probably 28 chickens. Yeah, that's it. 28. See, I DO know everything there ever is to know about chickens!

Okay, I'll behave myself. I just wanted our new member farmgirl46 to feel welcome and be glad she's here! If you need me, farmgirl, I'll be the one in the corner with the "dunce cap" on her head.
