I am new to chickens. I just got my baker's dozen of new babies last week. I have been planning this for months and have been reading all I can on the subject of raising chickens.

My wife and I are constructing our 12' x 24' run with 4x4 posts every 8' and 2"x4" welded wire. I attached 1" chicken wire inside the welded wire and outside the run to discourage diggers. I hope this will keep raccoons, possums, and foxes out. I am considering covering the top with more 2"x4" welded wire or should I use something else. Is this needed or am I being paranoid?

A lot of predators will consider 2" x 4" opening in the wire to be perfect for lunch snacking. Raccoons especially love to reach in and bite off any body part they can snag. Even if they don't kill the bird, they leave it with horrendous injuries and suffering. 1/2" Hardware cloth securely attached to framework, is the gold standard for predator protection. Run covers can protect the chickens somewhat from the elements if they are solid, and keep out climbers, jumpers , raptors and keep chickens from flying out.

Chicken wire only keeps chickens inside. It does nothing to keep predators out. They can claw or bite through it and will do so. You may want to check out predator threads on BYC, to learn the m.o. of various predators and how to send them on their way.

I don't think you are paranoid at all. Everything loves (to eat) chicken.
