Hi there! I am a new member her on BYC! Surprisingly, I do not actually have chickens of my own yet! My family and I have been seriously considering adding these wonderful animals to our flock though! I am very motivated to learn all that I can about chickens before I decide to add them to my family! Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome! Plan big! Thats my advice. I thought i only wanted 4.... then i added 4 more. And had to double the size of our coop. Then i got more and built another coop.
First we only wanted eggs for my husband and i , then my family wanted some....
Soon you will want more or your hen will hatch out chicks....
Etc... so plan big that way (if) you want more you have the room!
Also i suggest buying from the feed store already sexed pullets. Or ordering fromna hatchery. That way you dont end up with a bunch of roosters.
If you buy local be really really careful you dont buy sick birds. Thay can ruin your fun real fast.
Im currently chicken less- because of buying sick birds.
But have ducklings ordered to arrive tomorow morning!

Thank you so much for that advice! I originally wanted 3-4 so maybe I'll have to rethink! Haha!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! I am so glad you joined us and I hope you will make yourself at home here! :frow

It's always better to go bigger with any build. Chicken addiction strikes hard & fast. You will want to buy every new breed you encounter. We are all enablers here so don't expect us to stop you. Build twice as large as you think you will need. That way you probably won't need a second coop or addition till next year.

The Learning center above, is a great place to start your chicken education. If you put state name in the search box, it will pop up. You can post on it and see if any BYCERS are in your neighborhood.

BTW WELCOME TO BACKYARD CHICKENS

Welcome!

As you have already received some advice on good starting points, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
