Good Day everybody,

I am new member, and looking to getting a few backyard chickens once we close on our hobby farm. There are actually two small chicken houses on the property, but i plan to start out small...5-6 chickens for laying eggs. Which breed? I plan on letting them out to run around the farmyard, but i dont want to chase them around to get them back in the coop at night...is there a training method for that, or do they naturally go back to the feed/water in the coop? What is the better breed for laying eggs?...thoughts?

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you're joining us!
Keep them in the coop for three days when you are ready for them to go outside. They should realize that the coop is their home then. I used the three day method and it works great.
Great layers are buff Orpingtons and australorps and leghorns. Leghorns are usually flighty and skittish and the other two breeds make great pets. Just remember to socialize them a lot. Hold them, talk to them, sit with them, and they will make fabulous pets. I socialized mine very well and I have a few that will hop onto my lap and snuggle really close. And some ask to be hugged or picked up! Good luck with your flock!
