My name is Karen. We have had chickens in our little back yard downtown for about 9 years. I started because I had a baby and we wanted nutritious eggs for him. Now I am hatching my own, this is probably the 4th batch because I love it and think it is a good educational thing for my kids. In the past I have mail ordered eggs with fairly poor hatch rate, then used local eggs with a pretty good hatch rate in spite of a low rooster to hen ratio and now this year am mail ordering eggs again because I can't find any local eggs for sale from a farm with roosters.
So far- first batch 29 eggs in, 4 hatched.
Second batch- 12 eggs in, 2 hatched, 1 pipped and 1 moved so much all through I will probably let it stay for 7 days over before I check! On day 24 right now.

Welcome to backyard Chickens Karen maybe you could go back to the introduction page fill out a profile then we could see if we had member close for eggs or maybe buy them from you :gig

Hello, Karen, welcome to BYC. Sadly shipped eggs are generally a crap shoot as to viability.
One box had 3 broken eggs then hatched 4 out of the remaining eggs... who know???
My egg that had a loose air sac but a growing moving chick clear up to lockdown still hasn't hatched. Now it's day 23. The air sac was saddleback so I don't know if it died or what. I think I will leave it alone for another few days then maybe do the float test...
