New member!

Welcome to Backyard chickens! I really Hope you enjoy being here. We Just got four Wyandottes several days ago! This morning They pecked mealworms from my hands
P.S If you've never touched a dry mealworm, they are smooth and break easily! :welcome:woot:celebrate
I have touched mealworms...once I got over the ick-factor of touching worms (funny since I love gardening) it was fine.

Not sure if my girls are broody yet or not. They seem to prefer running about the yard. But you know, there is time. And we have enough room in the current coop for at least 6 more.

They may never become broody however will now lay fertile eggs. If this is the case you can either incubate them yourself in an incubator or ignore the fact they are fertile. Somebody could go broody in the spring.

Greetings LoriaHaven, Welcome to BYC!
If you don't want that rooster out with your girls, maybe he can be a house rooster. I hear they can be good alarm systems, and pour coffee, too! LOL! :gig

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Congrats on the new free addition to your flock! What a handsome guy! If you give it a couple of days and then break one of the eggs open, if it is fertile, you'll see a very small white "bulls eye" "dot" on the yolk. If it's NOT fertile, there'll be none. I offer this as early in the spring/late winter, sometimes the roos aren't as "fertile" as they are in the warmer weather.

As for the broodie thing, most production breeds today have had broodiness bred out of them in favor of increased egg production. When brooding, they stop laying. If one of your girls does go broody, you'll need to mark the eggs she starts with well, as the other girls will sneak in and add to her stash. That way you can remove any tha get added after the fact.

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
