I am a huge fan of Orpingtons, hardy, docile and great layers that also lay late into life. @N F C has left you with the link to a fabulous article on picking breeds. Welcome to our community!
Welcome to BYC, Michael! I"m sure you'll have a great time here. For breeds that lay lots of eggs, I'd recommend:
-Plymouth Rocks (lots of light brown eggs!)
-White Leghorns (large white eggs every day!)
-Easter Eggers (Fun looking layers of green or blue eggs, lay pretty well)
-Speckled Sussex (beautiful and great for eggs too!)
-Delaware (very pretty and actually endangered, I think!)
Most people get a lot of different breeds for variety in egg color and birds. Good luck on your chicken keeping journey!
